ONE of my all time favorite films is 1979’s “ALIEN” and i’ve followed the series of films very closely. I cant resist space horror or a strong Jaw line (I’m looking at you Sigourney). In total there are FOUR Alien films not counting the disastrous AVP films (Alien VS Predator). And while the first film and the sequel “ALIENS” are both highly regarded by fans and critics alike the subsequent Alien3 and Alien Resurrection saw a clear drop in quality. I enjoy Alien: Resurrection simply for the entertainment and splatter factors. But I will NEVER forgive David Fincher for what he did to NEWT & HICKS and for completely disregarding the story that was building from the previous films during his time on ALIEN3.

THEN in 2012 a little film called “PROMETHEUS” was released to the teeth gnashing, displeased fans of the Alien Series.

Prometheus was touted as a new story to take place within the same in-movie universe as Alien. The Cast and Crew pushed the fact that this movie was related to Alien BUT was its own story with its own characters and creatures. while at the same time the Marketing INSISTED this film was the sister film to Alien and finally the origin of the OG creature would be revealed and that supreme space horror would rain down upon us once more.

IN the end it turns out neither parties were exactly right. The most obvious connection to Alien was the far reaching Weyland-Yutani Corp. Although as Prometheus was a “prequel” Its just Weyland in the film. And we also got hints of the original Alien beast in the various new creatures that inhabited LV-223 . Not to mention the C Section scene which mirrored the infamous entrance of the chest burster. BUT THAT’S ABOUT IT. Oh and its in space. and there’s a villainous Android. The rest of the film tried to be bigger than the Alien films as far as the story was concerned. Lots of talk about Gods and religion and the question as to where life originated in the universe. And while personally i still think Prometheus is a great movie and beautiful to look at, it disappointed greatly as an ALIEN film.

Lets Bring it back to today 2016 and the avalanche of news flowing in the past few weeks on the upcoming ALIEN: Covenant.

Alien: Covenant has had a very wishy washy production, at least where the story is concerned. When a sequel to Prometheus was announced to be on its way the word on the street was that it would move even FURTHER from its Alien core. The ending saw Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David the android (Michael Fassbender)lifting off after committing grand theft auto with an Engineer Ship. Their destination was to be the Engineers home world. Already the departure from the original series was in motion with the Engineers being the center of attention (bunch of gym queens if you ask me) and there would be no more time spent on the classic xenomorph.

Now anyone who follows Ridley Scott or movie news in general know that the man ( Or the studio) can not make up his damn mind as to what kind of film Alien: Covenant would be. Firstly the title of the film has changed a billion times during the course of pre production. Starting as “Paradise Lost” the sequel was to slightly mirror elements of the epic poem Paradise Lost. But then during several interviews it was obvious Ridley hadn’t fully decided, he began to spill the beans that maybe Paradise Lost would have more in common with Alien then we thought.

This was confirmed when again the title was changed to Alien: Paradise Lost. We got confirmation that we would indeed see the engineer home world and also witness the birth of the original ALIEN. Noomi and Michael were signed on from the beginning as the movie would still continue their journey.

Cut to February 2016 and this is what we know of about the sequel….

The movie is now titled Alien: Covenant and Ridley has assured us we will be getting a much harder R with the horror aspects being pushed back to the forefront. Sounds fantastic to me however Ridley has promised things before and Production is barely going to be kicking off this month. A lot can change between now and the October 6, 2017 release date. Some upsetting news broke recently that Noomi Rapace would not be returning as Elizabeth Shaw, not long ago it was confirmed by Ridley that she would have a much smaller roll than Prometheus. However it looks as though the bitch died before the time Alien: Covenant takes place. Michael Fassbender was bumped up to having DUAL rolls in the film and Katherine Waterston was also cast although nothing about her character has been revealed.

All we know of the story is that the film will take place 10 years after Prometheus. A ship called the Covenant will run across the Engineer home world and find David as the sole inhabitant…or so we think. The egg, face hugger, chestburster and the big guy himself are all set to return making us fans very happy. The fact that Ridley is aiming for strong horror and a hard R also makes for welcoming news.

I’m optimistic, i still trust Ridley as a director and from what can be gathered they are taking the film back to the series’ earlier roots. Only time will tell and I know we all will be following any developments very closely as production begins.

This is Toby, last survivor in the office (I stay late) signing off!
